Prime Minister Narendra Modi has blocked Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy' plans of introducing compulsory "English Medium" in all government schools in Andhra Pradesh from this academic year.
The union cabinet meeting headed by PM Modi on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, approved New Education Policy-2020 for India, which mandates Medium of Instruction in regional/ local language till Class V.
Jagan issued GO early this year converting all Telugu Medium schools into English medium.
However, several petitions were filed in High Court against Jagan's decision to scrap teaching in mother tongue.
The High Court quashed the GO. But Jagan appealed against High Court orders in Supreme Court.
While this controversy was going on, the central government approved new education policy mandating all state governments to continue Medium of Instruction in local/ regional language till Class V.
