The University Grants Commission (UGC) made it clear that the state governments have no powers to cancel under graduate (UG), post graduate (PG) exams conducted by state universities on their own.
It said all the state universities function under the jurisdiction of UGC and UGC orders will be biding on all the state universities.
The UGC recently issued fresh guidelines asking all universities to conduct UG, PG final semester exams by Sepember-end. It said holding exams for final semester students is mandatory.
UGC officials sources said if final semester students are promoted and awarded degree, PG certificates without conducting exams, they hold no value and students may face problems in the future.
However, students and parents are strongly demanding cancellation of all UG, PG exams and promote students arguing that the present corona situation across the country is dangerous and conducting exams at this stage will risk the lives of students as corona case are speading fast across the country.
West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab and Odisha state government strongly opposed UGC's guidelines on holding exams and expressed their inability to conduct exams due to corona situation in their states. They are planning to cancel UG, PG exams.
