Scamsters duped two women in Hyderabad who registered themselves with a matrimonial site. While the first woman from Basheerbagh was duped of Rs 73,000, the second woman, who is a doctor, was duped of Rs 90,000.
Following the complaints lodged by women, the Central Crime Station police of Hyderabad booked a case on Thursday, June 25, 2020, and started investigation.
According to the police, in the first case, a woman from Basheerbagh registered with a matrimonial portal and got a response from one person who introduced himself as Abdul Hakeem from the Netherlands. The woman after communicating with him on the site for a few days, gave her phone number and they had conversations over WhatsApp.
"A few weeks ago, Hakeem told her he was sending her a gift. A day later, she got a phone call from a woman who claimed to be a Customs officer from Delhi and asked the woman to pay Rs.18,000 as customs clearance fee for the gift parcel. After two days, she again received a call from ‘Customs officials’. saying the parcel contained Euros and demanded Rs.55,000 for clearing it," said KVM Prasad, ACP of Cyber crimes Hyderabad.
The woman realized she was cheated after paying the money and she lodged a complaint with the Cyber crime police who have registered a case.
"In the second case, the victim, a doctor, was cheated in a similar fashion by one person who introduced himself as Dr. Anas from Holland. The woman transferred Rs. 90,000 to the bank accounts provided by the fraudsters who introduced themselves as Customs officials" said the police.
